New ViP project granted

Description

Motion driving simulators are able to represent some of the characteristic motions of a vehicle. Such representations are closely related to hardware limitations, which narrow the set of available dynamic cues during a simulation. Working within these constrains implies that the simulated dynamics can never exactly match real vehicle motions. However, within certain limits, for an adequate selection of motion strategies as well as dynamics manoeuvres, simulated motion cues may be well suited to real world cues.

This project aims at investigating the possibility of using driving simulators for vehicle evaluation in vehicle dynamics testing. Based on real-world testing, a set of testing manoeuvres will be defined together with a tuning scheme for simulator motion, which will in turn be evaluated objectively as well as subjectively by drivers. The results of these investigations will determine if the scope of current driving simulation activities can be expanded to encapsulate vehicle dynamics testing. If true, a motion driving simulator could be used to complement and possibly even replace some of the current methods for vehicle dynamics evaluation, that are currently conducted in other test facilities, thus opening up new range of testing opportunities.
