Known Roads - real roads in simulated environments for the virtual testing of new vehicle systems

The objective of the "Known Roads" project was to measure real roads, create digital representations of these and use them in the ViP driving simulators. In a first phase three roads were measured and modeled; Road 40 Göteborg-Borås, road 180 Borås-Alingsås and road E20 Göteborg-Alingsås. A second step included road E4 Södertälje-Jönköping.

The digital roads will be used in several ViP projects dealing with advanced vehicle systems, where it is necessary to develop and test concept in early phases, preferably tested on known roads.

The challenge in this project was to manage the huge amount of data that is created in order to present the roads in the simulator. Three software tools have been developed in order to deal with this. One tool generates the surrounding terrain derived from digital map data from Lantmäteriverket, another creates the virtual road (to be used in the simulator) based on data measured by the VTI RST Vehicle and GPS data, and finally a tool that part-wise uploads data to the simulator "on-the-fly".
