LDW - Active and passive Lane Departure
Warning systems

There are two types of lane departure warning systems: the active one, mounted on the vehicle, and the passive one, milled rumble strips on the road. In order to compare the performance and the driver's opinion of the two systems, a virtual LDW system as well as the possibility to produce rumble strips effects, will be implemented in the simulator. Furthermore, means for driver distraction and driving disturbance will be developed using the global view of ViP regarding different simulator sites.

 

In both systems, the active and the passive, there is a risk of false or missing signals. The estimated number of such failures will be implemented in the simulator, using data from an empirical test which is carried out independently of the ViP study. Finally, the improved simulator will be used in a behavioural study which aims to investigate how the two lane departure warning systems influence the drivers and which of the two systems the drivers prefer.
